Ostuni



Ostuni, a renowned tourist destination in the province of Brindisi, lies on three hills at 229 meters above sea level, has 33,000 inhabitants. The historic center, gathered on top of a hill, is visible in the distance from the coast, the coastal plain and the nearby hills, giving the town a suggestive aspect. The municipal area is very large with 223.77 sq km and an altitude from 0 to 380 meters above sea level. It is divided into two well-defined areas: the hill, which goes as far as the Itria Valley (10 km away), and the olive grove downstream from the city. The green of the olive trees ends and merges with the blue of the sea of ​​the Ostuni marina, which stretches for a good 20 kilometers from Lido Morelli (Parco delle Dune Costiere) to Lamaforca, with a succession of enchanting places and dream beaches. Ostuni mare in 2009 won three coveted awards: the "capital of Altosalento" is among the thirteen Italian resorts awarded with the "Five Sails" of Legambiente and Touring Club, "Green Flag" (first place) for the ideal beaches for children and reconfirmed "Blue Flag". Also in 2010 the Blue Flag and the Flag of the Five Sails of Legambiente waved over the White City. In 2011, once again, a blue banner, a yellow banner and a green banner for Ostuni. In 2012 he reconfirmed the Blue Flag, the eighteenth since 1987, the year in which the particular certification was established. In 2013 it is replicated with the nineteenth blue banner and the fifth emblem of the "Cinque Vele". In 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017 still Blue Flag. The city is known throughout the world as the "White City" for the fairytale charm of its historic center with whitewashed houses. Tradition has it that it was a miracle of Sant’Oronzo that saved Ostuni from the plague; but it was probably the white lime, a natural disinfectant, that saved the village. The Tourist Information and Reception Office (I.A.T.) is in Corso Mazzini 8, near Piazza della Libertà just before the start of the climb to the white historic center.
